MC Wale’s Musings of the Week: Post D.C. Edition

Just jumping into the different muses I’ve had lately….

The Jaguars are bad and this season as a whole is a massive disappointment. While I’m upset with the team’s performance, I feel that there are certain lines that fans should never cross. I’ve seen and heard more backlashes about the ownership and some even going as far as trashing the Khan family as a whole. My philosophy has always been that fans can and should be critical of front office/ownership performance, but the second you go in on someone’s family, you’ve crossed a line.

I don’t know why people are so shocked that Penn State was effectively blocked out of the College Football Playoff. This playoff is a sham and just a way to make people want to push for 8 team playoff, which it should have been from the start. Honestly, the real playoff system should be the conference champions from the Power 5 and three at-large bids. I’d even accept the top two teams in every conference move to the playoff bracket. No more complaints and more football. Classes be damned.

Back to the Jaguars, I feel awful about Allen Robinson not getting the critical pass interference calls, especially after the game against the Denver Broncos. There were easily two or three no-calls that should have been and Robinson collected a 15-yard personal foul yelling at a referee after getting mugged on a fourth-down play late in the game. But, Robinson also needs to give more consistent effort on the field too, because when a football hits you in the chest, don’t bobble it and have it get stolen from you.

I took a day trip to the Nation’s capital, Washington D.C. this past weekend. I must say that it’s a great city to visit and explore. The history of the country surrounds you, Ubers and taxis are plentiful and there are some fantastic restaurants and nightlife options. As a proponent of travelling, even if it’s for a short time, it’s something folks need to do consistently. Make that happen.

MC Wale Talks Jaguars W/ Nate Lundy – Episode 4 of the Jax Files

So I had the pleasure of hopping on the newest episode of The Jax Files, a podcast hosted by Nate Lundy on the 5280 Sports Network. Nate and I discussed the recent performances of the Jacksonville Jaguars and what to hope for the team as they go through the next two weeks. Also on this episode, Nate talks with former NFL coach Brian Billick and Senior Writer for SI/MMBQ Jenny Vrentas. You can check out the newest episode here or just listen below.

The Top 16 Jaguars of 2016: #1 Allen Robinson

As the Jaguars season begins, so too does our countdown end. Allen Robinson is the best player on the Jaguars roster — if anyone tells you otherwise, then you need to stop listening to them when they talk football. Robinson was drafted in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, when the Jaguars traded back up into the second round to acquire the wide receiver from Penn State. Since then, all he has done is rack up 134 catches, 2,020 receiving yards, and 16 TDs. Robinson was the second receiver drafted by the Jaguars in the 2014 draft, but he is now, without a doubt, the best receiver and player on the team.

When Robinson entered the NFL many questioned his top end speed and did not think he would be able to separate from defenders. Everyone who thought that was wrong. Robinson is plenty fast — He ran a 4.42 at his Pro Day which should have silenced the critics, but of course that was overlooked. His work ethic, which has allowed him to becoming an elite route runner, and his incredible ability to make plays on 50/50 balls has propelled him into the conversation of the elite receivers in the NFL.

But how is he able to catch so many balls with defenders draped all over him? His 6 foot 3 inches, 220 pound frame combined with his insane 40 inch vertical leap allows him to get better position on the ball than his defender and then his hands do the rest.

The Bottom Line: Following a 1,400 yard, 14 TD sophomore campaign expectations are sky high for the 23 year old wide receiver. He has time and lots of it before his skills begin to diminish, so the potential for this receiving phenom is virtually limitless. With a good offense around him and an improving young QB, Robinson will be one of the best wide receivers in the NFL for years to come.

Kevin Durant is Like One of Us

I don’t know if you heard the news, but NBA stud Kevin Durant announced on The Player’s Tribune that as a free agent, he will be joining the Golden State Warriors. As you can imagine, Oklahoma State Thunder and some NBA fans were not happy.

For me, I’ll never understand why fans of sports teams and athletes would go to the levels of burning a player’s jersey, putting For Sale signs in front of player’s homes or other discouraging tactics to show their disapproval of a choice or decision. Honestly, we’ve all done things similar to this.

Athletes are people, too. Let us change the perspective from an athlete making millions of dollars a year to one that is a little more normal. Say Kevin Durant is a contractor at your place of employment and he has just finished up his contract. He was a great employee and a dope co-worker. Your office makes him an offer that is pretty good and you hope he stays. But company B, who has just been nominated for “Best Company to Work For” two years in a row, pitches Kevin a position where he is going to make more money and have an opportunity to win a “Best Company to Work For” (which is something he’s wanted since becoming a contractor). Are you going to be that upset if he decides to change things up because he wants to chase a dream or wants a different opportunity? Nah, you would say “Thanks for your time here and good luck with your opportunity.”

Thunder fans, he fulfilled his contract. He looked at all of his options. He made a choice that ultimately was best for him. If we looked at the Jacksonville Jaguars, we have a few players coming up on contract deals soon. Although I would be a little upset if WR Allen Robinson decided that four years in Duval was enough and he wanted to explore free agency, I wouldn’t hold it against him or even fault him for leaving. Players have to do what’s best for them. You would probably do the exact same thing if you were in a similar situation. We all have to remember that it’s not a personal slight or a dig at the city or team you support, it’s a business and personal decision and we all have to respect that.
